Unboxing the Palm Pre Plus, GSM version

June 12, 2010

OK, I admit it: I have a soft spot for WebOS! I also much prefer GSM devices, so ever since I picked up the original Palm Pre a year ago, I have been secretly jonesing for a GSM version.

Well I recently acquired a Palm Pre Plus, GSM version. It was locked to AT&T, but not for very long :) Unfortunately, it only supports 3G on the 850/1900 MHz bands (mostly prevalent in the US/Canada) but is quad-band for 2G…

Palm Pixi Plus camera

March 22, 2010

Short version. The Palm Pixi Plus camera is crap!

Long version. The Pixi Plus offers significant value with significant compromise. While the software is elegant and intuitive, the hardware is cheap and slow. Ditto the camera…

Unboxing the Motorola Devour

March 10, 2010

Another day, another Android phone with BLUR. The Motorola Devour is Verizon’s take on the Motorola CLIQ. It’s billed as a baby Motorola Droid of sorts, except it’s not!

The Devour looks like a premium device. The body is machined out of a single block of aluminum, just like the MacBook Pro. The spring-loaded sliding mechanism of the QWERTY keyboard feels truly fantastic, and the optical trackpad is a lovely touch. In that respect, it’s nicer than the CLIQ and the Droid…

The Palm Pixi Plus is here

January 26, 2010

A few days ago I received a Palm Pixi Plus from the friendly people at Verizon. As you know I’ve been using a Palm Pre on and off since launch, but I snubbed the original Pixi for lack of WiFi. Thankfully, it’s been remedied with the Plus :)

So what’s my take so far? Palm makes great software running on lackluster hardware. While the Pixi Plus is extremely affordable for a fully featured smartphone, it is also awash with a veritable smorgasbord of plastics. As a result it feels even cheaper than the Pre

Unboxing the Google Nexus One

January 8, 2010

Today is my birthday, the perfect day to get my very own Google Nexus One :) Was it worth all the speculation, hype, and scoops? You bet – the Nexus One is the new benchmark of the phone world!

Sure, the Nokia N900 features a better camera, the Motorola Droid a physical keyboard, the Apple iPhone 3GS more applications, the Palm Pre a nicer user experience. But after using the Nexus One for just a few hours, it’s clear to me that it’s a milestone device…

Samsung Instinct s30 hands-on

July 30, 2009

The story reads something like this. Once upon a time, I contacted the friendly people at Sprint and asked for a Palm Pre review unit in time for launch day…

Unfortunately, they were unable to accommodate my request due to lack of devices, so instead, I just picked up a Palm Pre on launch day and returned it within 30 days. As a consolation prize, they were kind enough to provide me with a Samsung Instinct s30!

But wait, the Samsung Instinct s30 is a CDMA touchscreen feature phone with a basic camera. I only review smartphones, or phones with cameras that, at a minimum, feature auto-focus with macro. I only deal with GSM devices, and rarely cover CDMA phones. Oh noes :)

Well, I did the graceful thing – instead of a full review, I did a hands-on, all the while keeping an open mind and adjusting my expectations.
